“Restorative dentistry” can sound technical, but the idea behind it is simple.
“Restorative dentistry is essentially about repairing or rebuilding what’s lost in a tooth. There are different reasons you might lose some tooth — it might be decay, you might have chipped a tooth, or worn a tooth. Essentially, we’re looking at ways to restore what’s been lost.”
Dr Jo Fraser, principal dentist, Everwell Dental
In other words, it’s the everyday, life-improving dentistry that keeps your own teeth working well and looking good for as long as possible — from a small filling right through to rebuilding a worn or damaged smile.
For most patients, it comes down to one thing: decay.
“Decay is generally the most common reason. Perhaps there’s been too much sugar in the diet, or an older filling or crown where decay has got underneath. Once we’ve got decay in a tooth it won’t stop by itself — once it’s through to the dentine layer, it’s always going to get bigger and worse. That’s where we come in: to remove the decay, stop it in its tracks, and fill the space so we can preserve that tooth for the long run.”
Dr Jo Fraser
The key message: a small problem caught early is far easier to fix than a big one left too late.
A lot of people put off the dentist because they’re worried about what they’ll be told. If that’s you, Dr Jo has a simple message.
“When you come in, we can spot problems sooner. If somebody has a little bit of decay, they won’t necessarily get any pain until much later — and by then a small problem can become a big one. So come on in, have your teeth checked. People are often so worried they’ll have lots of problems. You might not — you might be absolutely fine. But if there is something there, it’s better we find it sooner rather than later. And don’t worry — you’ll never get told off for coming in.”

That welcoming, no-judgement approach is at the heart of how Everwell looks after nervous patients and anyone who hasn’t been to a dentist in a while.
Composite bonding is a treatment Dr Jo has a particular interest in — largely because of how conservative it is.
“I really like composite bonding because it’s generally a minimally invasive technique. Most of the time we don’t need to be drilling away or removing healthy tooth tissue. We’re bonding onto the surface of your teeth. Composite is a white filling material — the same we use in back teeth. When it’s for cosmetic reasons on the front teeth, it might be that a tooth has worn a bit shorter, or teeth are uneven, and we build them up to give a more even, uniform and lovely appearance.”
Dr Jo Fraser
Because it usually works with your natural teeth rather than reshaping them, composite bonding is often a wonderful option for restoring worn or uneven front teeth — and it pairs beautifully with Invisalign as the finishing touch to a smile makeover.
Restorative work is about far more than fixing teeth — it’s about how you feel every day.
“There’s the confidence from how your teeth feel and how they look. How they feel is the function — being able to eat well and chew well. Our mouth is an amazing bit of machinery; it takes so much load with every meal, and when bits aren’t working well, or food’s getting stuck, or things hurt when you bite, that’s just not a nice way to be. Once you’ve had some really nice work done and your teeth feel like they used to, you get that confidence back.”

And then there’s the visible side:
“If you don’t want to smile, if you’re not comfortable with people seeing your teeth, if you’re always hiding away in photos — it’s such a shame. The difference when we can transform that for somebody, and get them grinning and happy again — oh, it’s just magical.”
Dr Jo Fraser
What ties all of this together at Everwell is a commitment to quality that comes from playing the long game with every patient.
“The dentistry I do is high-quality general dentistry, and it’s really important that it’s done well. I’m going to be seeing my patients for a really long time — I’ve no intention of going anywhere — so I know I’ll look at that work every six months when they come back for a check-up. I need to know it’s going to last.”
