What to Do in a Dental Emergency — Southam, Daventry and Rugby

Dental emergencies do not care what day of the week it is or how busy you are. Whether it is a broken tooth, a knocked-out crown, a lost filling, or sudden and severe toothache, the best thing you can do is act quickly and contact a dentist as soon as possible.

Everwell Dental is a new private dental practice in Southam, Warwickshire, serving patients across the area including those travelling in from Daventry and Rugby. This guide covers the most common dental emergencies, what to do while you wait for an appointment, and when getting seen quickly really matters.

Toothache: When Should You Be Worried?

Not all toothache is the same. A mild sensitivity to cold that passes quickly is very different from a persistent, throbbing pain that keeps you awake at night.

Toothache that is getting worse, or that is accompanied by swelling, fever, or a bad taste in the mouth, needs to be assessed by a dentist promptly. These can be signs of infection, which can spread if left untreated. Do not wait to see if it goes away on its own.

In the meantime, over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen (if suitable for you) can help manage discomfort. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum or tooth, as this can cause burns.

Knocked-Out or Chipped Teeth

If a permanent tooth has been knocked out completely, acting within the hour gives the best chance of saving it. Handle the tooth by the crown (the white part you can see), not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it very gently with milk or clean water. Do not scrub it. Try to place it back in the socket if you can, or keep it in a container of milk or saliva, and get to a dentist as fast as possible.

A chipped or fractured tooth may not cause immediate pain, but exposed tooth structure is vulnerable to further damage and decay. Contact a dentist to get it assessed, even if it feels fine for now.

Lost Fillings and Crowns

A lost filling or crown is not usually a dental emergency in the same sense as severe pain or a knocked-out tooth, but it does need attention. The exposed tooth underneath is vulnerable and may become sensitive or painful.

If a crown has come off cleanly and the tooth underneath is not painful, you may be able to gently place the crown back temporarily using dental cement from a pharmacy. Do not use superglue. Contact your dentist as soon as possible to get it properly cemented back in place.

Dental Abscess — Do Not Ignore This

An abscess is a build-up of infection at the root of a tooth or in the gum. Signs include severe toothache, swelling in the face or jaw, a bad taste in the mouth, and sometimes fever.

A dental abscess is a medical situation that needs prompt professional attention. It will not resolve on its own, and in rare cases, untreated dental infections can become serious. If you are experiencing significant facial swelling or difficulty swallowing or breathing alongside dental pain, go to A&E immediately.

For a suspected abscess without those severe symptoms, contact Everwell Dental to be seen as quickly as possible.
