What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that fills a gap left by one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (called pontics) held in place by crowns on the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Once in place, a bridge feels and functions like a natural tooth and doesn’t need to be removed for cleaning.

Bridges are a well-established alternative to implants and dentures and are particularly suitable where the teeth adjacent to the gap are strong enough to support the restoration.

Why replace a missing tooth?

Gaps in your teeth aren’t just an aesthetic concern. When a tooth is lost, the teeth on either side can gradually drift towards the space, and the tooth above or below can over-erupt into the gap. This can affect your bite, make cleaning more difficult, and lead to further dental problems over time. A bridge helps prevent these issues.

What to expect

  • A consultation to assess the gap and surrounding teeth
  • Preparation of the support teeth under local anaesthetic
  • An impression taken to produce a bridge to your precise measurements
  • A temporary bridge fitted while your permanent one is made
  • Your final bridge fitted and adjusted at a second appointment

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a bridge last?

With proper care and regular check-ups, a dental bridge can last ten to fifteen years or more. Keeping the area clean, particularly beneath the bridge, is important for the long-term health of both the bridge and the supporting teeth.

Is a bridge better than an implant?

Both are effective options. Implants don’t require the support of neighbouring teeth and tend to be longer-lasting, but they involve a surgical process and a longer treatment timeline. A bridge can be a good option when the surrounding teeth already need crowning, or when an implant isn’t suitable. Your dentist will help you weigh up the options for your situation.

How do I clean a bridge?

You’ll brush the bridge as normal, but because the artificial tooth sits against the gum rather than having a root, you’ll also need to clean beneath it using floss threaders or interdental brushes. We’ll show you exactly how to do this at your fitting appointment.
