A scale and polish is a professional clean carried out by your dentist. It involves two steps: scaling, which removes hardened tartar and plaque build-up from the surfaces of your teeth and around the gum line, and polishing, which buffs away surface staining to leave teeth feeling smooth and clean.
Even with an excellent brushing and flossing routine at home, tartar can build up in areas that are difficult to reach. A scale and polish removes this effectively and helps keep your gums healthy.

For most patients, a scale and polish during your regular check-up is sufficient. If you have a tendency to build up more tartar, or have early signs of gum disease, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits. We’ll always advise you on what’s appropriate for your individual needs.
Most patients find it comfortable. You may feel some mild sensitivity, particularly around the gum line, but this usually settles quickly. Let us know if you’re finding it uncomfortable and we can adjust our approach.
A scale and polish removes surface staining and leaves your teeth looking cleaner and brighter. However, it won’t change the natural colour of your teeth. If you’re interested in teeth whitening, we’d be happy to discuss your options.
