When is a crown needed?

A crown is used when a tooth is too damaged or weakened to be restored with a filling alone. This might follow significant decay, a break or crack, root canal treatment, or simply heavy wear over time. A crown wraps around the remaining tooth structure, protecting it and restoring its function.

We use porcelain crowns as standard at Everwell Dental. Porcelain closely replicates the translucency and colour of natural enamel, giving a result that is both strong and visually natural.

What to expect

  • A consultation to assess the tooth and confirm a crown is the right option
  • Preparation of the tooth under local anaesthetic to create space for the crown
  • An impression taken to produce a crown that fits precisely
  • A temporary crown fitted while your permanent one is made
  • Your final crown fitted and adjusted at a second appointment for a comfortable, natural bite

How long do crowns last?

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, porcelain crowns typically last ten years or more. The tooth underneath still needs to be cared for, and the gum line around the crown should be brushed and flossed carefully each day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the crown match my other teeth?

Yes. We take great care in matching the shade of your crown to your surrounding teeth. Porcelain crowns have a natural translucency that blends well with natural enamel.

Is the preparation painful?

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel any discomfort during preparation. Some sensitivity is normal for a few days afterwards and usually settles quickly.

Can a crown fall off?

It’s uncommon, but it can happen if the cement holding the crown breaks down over time. If you notice a crown feels loose or comes off, get in touch with us as soon as possible and we’ll re-cement it or assess whether replacement is needed.
