Replace Fillings

Old or failing fillings can be replaced with modern, tooth-coloured restorations that look and feel completely natural.

When should fillings be replaced?

Fillings don’t last forever. Over time, they can become worn, cracked, or loose, and older amalgam fillings can begin to break down at the edges, allowing bacteria to get in underneath. If you have fillings that are old, damaged, or simply bothering you aesthetically, it’s worth discussing replacement options with your dentist.

Many patients choose to replace silver amalgam fillings with tooth-coloured composite alternatives, both for appearance and to benefit from more modern bonding materials.

Signs that a filling may need replacing

  • Sensitivity or pain around an existing filling
  • Visible cracks, chips, or wear in the filling material
  • A rough or uneven texture when you run your tongue over it
  • Discolouration or dark edges around an older filling
  • A filling that feels loose or has partially fallen out

Our approach

Before recommending any replacement, your dentist will carefully assess the existing filling and the tooth beneath it. If replacement is appropriate, we’ll use high-quality tooth-coloured composite material to restore the tooth to a natural, comfortable finish. We’ll only recommend what is genuinely necessary, and we’ll explain our reasoning clearly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to replace all my old amalgam fillings?

Not necessarily. We’d assess each filling individually. Many amalgam fillings remain perfectly serviceable for years, and removing them unnecessarily can disturb healthy tooth structure. We’d only recommend replacement if there’s a clinical reason or if you have a strong preference for tooth-coloured alternatives.
