What is fluoride varnish?

Fluoride varnish is a concentrated fluoride treatment that is painted directly onto the surfaces of your teeth by your dentist or hygienist. It works by strengthening the tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid attack from plaque and food, and helping to prevent cavities from developing.

It’s a painless, non-invasive treatment that takes just a few minutes, and it’s suitable for both children and adults.

Who benefits from fluoride varnish?

  • Children and teenagers during the development of adult teeth
  • Patients with a higher risk of tooth decay
  • Patients with exposed root surfaces due to gum recession
  • Anyone with early signs of enamel erosion or sensitivity
  • Adults looking to strengthen and protect their teeth as part of a preventative care routine

What to expect

The varnish is applied quickly with a small brush or applicator. It has a slightly sticky texture at first, but sets within seconds. We usually recommend avoiding food and drink for about 30 minutes afterwards to allow the fluoride to absorb fully. Some patients notice a slight yellow tint on their teeth immediately after application, but this fades with the first brush.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is fluoride varnish safe for children?

Yes. Fluoride varnish is widely used in children’s dentistry and is considered safe and effective when applied professionally. It’s different to fluoride toothpaste and is applied in much smaller amounts.

How often should fluoride varnish be applied?

For most patients, twice a year is sufficient. For those at higher risk of decay, your dentist may recommend more frequent applications.
